Proctor has once again delivered an enthralling romance set "down under," in this case on that mysterious island country, Tasmania, lying south of Australia. Set in 1840, it tells the story of Jesmond ("Jessie") Corbett, an independent thinking, science-loving heroine who, while raised in Tasmania, spent two years in London studying geology. Returning home to the country she loves, she notices a new convict laborer, a handsome, green-eyed Irishman who, when he is not putting on the brogue, speaks as a gentleman. Lucas Gallagher, son of an Irish shipbuilder, was studying to become a barrister when the English brutally attacked his sister and him, scaring them forever. Spared a hanging, Lucas was transported to Tasmania to serve a life sentence as a convict slave. After brutal treatment by the English there, he determines to escape or die trying--that is, until he meets Jessie.Proctor sheds light on the life of those transported to the Australian colonies as convicts destined to suffer cruel treatment and spend years, even their whole lives in some cases, as servants to the landowners. It's a bit of history we should all know about and it causes me to respect those who made mistakes and more than paid for them. NIGHT IN EDEN, her first book, is another great one that does this, only set in New South Wales.
As with her other romances, Proctor gives us a worthy heroine and a noble hero. Jessie struggles between doing what her family expects of her (an arranged marriage), and following her heart. Lucas struggles with whether freedom and/or death are preferable to being with Jessie as her convict servant. Neither can resist the other and both live desperate lives since they know they can never be together. Thank God this is romance and you know a happy ending is coming. But there is much angst and suspense along the way. This is a great novel and a great love story. I highly recommend it.

In a remarkable coincidence I read this novel just after reading THE PASSIONS OF EMMA by Penelope Williamson. I was immediately struck by the similarities of the two. Different locations but the exact same plot wealthy heiress falls in love with a man of lesser/unacceptable class. I am not bothered by the repetition as both books are absolutely amazing reads in this genre. Filled with emotion and heartwrenching examples of the oppression of certain classes of people (in both of these, the Irish). I love it when my favorite reads also teach about parts of history that might have been neglected in my education. I am now looking for and collecting books written by both of these writers. After some research I discovered that they are sisters and share a very similar writing style. This book was published in 2001 and 'Emma' was published in 1997. Can't recommend these two highly enough!
The book was in excellent condition and a good read.
As a gift, great, and in very good condition
I've now come to the conclusion that CP is more of a general fiction writer than romance. I love a great love story that develops slowly, as it makes it more believable in the end, however, by three-quarters through, the leads did not share a kiss, an intimate touch, nothing.
Even in their thoughts there was not much inner turmoil going on until the last half. In fact, I prferred Warrick's romance sub-plot over Lucas and Jesmond's.
I gave the book three stars because of CP's excellent prose, the setting, and her creativity.
I loved this book as I enjoy C.S Harris novels also. I did not know how much I could learn to like big font also, so thank you for that too!
This is a fantastic historical romance! This was my first book from this author and I absolutely love it! At the beginning of the book her writing seems too descriptive, lots of adjectives. But as the story progresses those details don't bother any more. I highly recommend this read. It made to my favorites bookshelf
Whispers of Heaven is a refreshing departure from the norm in its choice of setting - Tasmania. Candice Proctor evokes the sights, smells, and sounds of this colonial island so beautifully, I wish I could visit it. I can't say, however, that the romance between the main characters, Jesmond Corbett and Irish convict Lucas Gallagher who works on her estate, was the strongest or most compelling aspect of the book. Given their identities, their love is star crossed and seemingly doomed. They are divided by family, society, past, and prejudices. Proctor paints Tasmanian society so well that the obstacles dividing the two - the stigma of being a convict, the demands of Jesmond's position (she's also betrothed to her childhood friend Harrison Tate) - are rendered stark and believable, so that their relationship really does feel like a tragedy - a bit dramatic, but still so sad. Even though I knew they were supposed to end up together in the end, while I was caught up in the story, I wondered how things could possibly work out and felt their pain and despair. No fluff and fun here. But there's just something lacking between the two of them, chemistry perhaps, that left me feeling a bit dissatisfied in this respect. Individually their characters are superbly done - Jesmond's path to self discovery and freedom is great to follow and Lucas is very steamy - not that there's not more to him than that )
Despite the less than breathtaking nature of the romance, I still enjoyed the book immensely, proof that it is strong enough in other areas. Proctor's way of representing all the other sundry characters in the book completely won me over - no one is evil, no one is perfect (except for maybe Lucas - his railings against British tyranny can seem a bit preachy.) Even Harrison is human. They all have their own problems, their own pains and joys and hopes. The relationship between Jesmond's brother Warrick and her friend, the sister of her betrothed, Phillipa Tate, was where I found powerful romance in this book, and I wish they had been the stars. Still, the ending was one of the better ones I have came across - it really gripped me as I cheered Jesmond and Lucas on to their happily ever after, so overall, a very well done book.
