Adventure travel books so often divide into "look at me, I'm superman" or "descent into hell." Jasper Winn's "Paddle" cheerfully skirts both of these tired approaches. He is very clear that he is not superman, but also that if you keep paddling you get both stronger and more skillful and with some luck and good humor you can make an impressive journey. And he is clear that there were dangers involved and that he was sometimes frightened, but also that with luck and good humor...
There's a lot of good humor here, along with excellent descriptions of scenery, waves, weather, and the shifting moods of a long-distance traveler, and a lot of entertaining meditations on whatever came into Jasper's mind as he paddled against time and miserable climactic conditions.
It is the sort of book that makes you want to meet the author and share a drink, and also makes you want to get up, get out, and do something challenging and exciting. A pleasurable and inspiring read, from a witty and eloquent raconteur.
Quite well written - by the end you feel you know this unusual character personally. Long days paddling give one plenty of time to think, and he shares lots of his thoughts as he goes along.
Just a third of the way through the book but enjoying it so far. Note this will not teach you how to paddle around Ireland, it's just one man's story about his adventure. Enjoyable as that.
Jasper is a writer first and kayaker a very distant second. He tells great tales of a slow circumnavigation of Ireland. No high tech high performance race for records. Plenty of pubs and craic and music, wet weeks stranded by bad weather. Beautifully paced enjoyable read. Highly rated.
great kayaking adventure book that gives one a real sense of Ireland!
I did not expect a story of the relentless toil of paddling a kayak around Ireand's coast to be fast paced .However Jasper Winn made it fascinating .
In the style of many long forgotten explorers ,he just had an idea ,an ambition. Starting off without fuss or bother he faced treacherous seas and currents with stoic calm . After completing the circumnavigation he pulled his kayak ashore and calmly went home . Inspiring stuff.
As a kayaker myself, I found the subject matter interesting - as a book the author never gives as much of himself as the reader needs to understand the story behind the story. We get glimpses of what has brought the about the voyage but never more than that - great travel books are as much about the internal journey as the external and how one effects the other.
Having said that it is a nice read and easy to get through.
