Kid Centrifuge is a rock band with dreams no bigger than other rock bands ho-hum, tour and get signed and be famous and change the universe. Alas, unlike their rock-music forebears, our heroes live in a world that has largely moved on to techno, dance and pop. Sure, the music industry is still littered with double-crossers and backbiters, but now they're looking for DJs, and maybe guitar champions need no longer apply. So the Kids tilt against the same old windmills musicians have battled forever, but with a suspicion that the same old animating dream -- all you need is a guitar and a great song and you'll make a million bucks-- is dead. That gives their grass-roots aspirations more than a little desperation, and bad decisions ensue. War On Sound gets inside its four featured musicians -- Amanda, the singer; Sebastian, the guitarist; Kate, the drummer; and Scott, the bass player and angsty piloting force -- the way Don DeLillo did in Great Jones Street and Roddy Doyle did in The Commitments. These talented kids wage war, blinkers in place, faith challenged...they have big success and big failure, and they keep playing. War On Sound is by turns hilarious and profound, and illimunates the contemporary music scene better than any recent novel.

War On Sound is an immensely readable book. It contain excellent character development and a real peak behind the curtain as to what a struggling rock band goes through in today's market, or lack thereof. You do not have to be a "music junky" to appreciate and enjoy this book...I certainly am not. A well written piece of literary fiction that immerses you in the world the characters live in. Highly recommend.

Well written novel that was difficult to put down. Chris does a great job writing a very entertaining story and develops the characters throughout the entire story line. Highly recommend.
War On Sound gives a very sincere description of the inde-rock music scene that in recent history, has been nothing more than an after thought in the minds of the record companies and the public at large. Through Chris' research and writing, we can see the parallels between the modern day guitar hero and the literary fiction writer as they both try and find their place in the doldrums of public's consciousness.
War On Sound is one of those books that a reader gets lost in. You sit down to read a little, maybe an hour, maybe a chapter. Then you look up to rub your eyes and you're astonished that three hours have passed. I'm not big into indie rock but I appreciate the journey the band goes through. War On Sound is excellent.
The book is fantastic. I was entirely obsessed with reading the journey of the four voices, often reveling in their exciting and funny late night journeys (specifically Sebastian’s joyous game in Minneapolis and Amanda’s odd mistaken call girl conversation that same night – ah the places we go). The most absorbing section was the recording of the album. It’s a process I have never been a part of but have read/watched several times –and it was fascinating to experience the creative minds at work. And then… watching it all fail. WAR ON SOUND surprised me in creating vibrant and authentic characters to experience the journey of a rock band in an EDM drenched world. There was never a moment I did not want to continue to learn more about Kate, Scott, Sebastian and Amanda – especially once the story concluded.
I never thought a fiction about musicians could grab my attention throughout the entire book. But after reading first couple chapters, I was completely engaged and intrigued by the characters and what will happen next.
The characters are electric as the story folds. The conversations that take could replace some of conversations in real life regardless of your profession or family. If you ever tried to do something different or something that needed to win people's approval, you'll be able to relate all characters at different points of this book.
A book that makes you aware of the feelings that we all ignore while pretending living buys lives. MUST READ.
A character driven look at the improbability of hope and inevitability of despair, and a group of kids struggling to grow up and be somebody in an environment increasingly hostile to their dreams. (Mostly they struggle.) At times it feels a little bogged down in angst, self-doubt and introspection, but perhaps that's me projecting, or perhaps that's a meta-commentary on the traps associated with the thirst to create something meaningful. In any event, any bogs are quickly overcome by the driving plot and the palpable desire of the characters. The book is well worth the purchase and your time. Enjoy.
As a music enthusiast, it's obvious that the author implemented some extensive research to put this novel together. He must know certain bands that gave him access to their buses and back of the stage because the detail in the stories are so unique and in a sense, practical even though the activities are far from logical. These kinds of things happen on tour for a lot of these bands today, especially Indy bands. People just aren't really aware of them because they are very far back behind the scenes. Excellent look into a band starting out and gradually climbing to super stardom. Do they make it? I highly recommend you find out for yourself.
