Tom Icing, the riveting hero of Dyson's previous foray into the world of autobiographical fiction, Never Entertain During Watermelon Season, is back. He's older, he's married, and he's still looking for a job, but he's back. He's everyman, he's mellowed. He (like me, come to think of it) is wondering why the space bar on his computer keyboard only works when it wants to. And he's haunted by memories and decisions made over thirty years ago, and the sudden reappearance in his life of the sources of those memories and decisions, and the lives affected by them.
In short, Tom Icing is just like the rest of us except he is living in Caleeforneeya.
Finding himself suddenly a victim of an economy in the crapper and out of work due to downsizing and outsourcing, our relentless yet troubled hero stumbles onto an internet networking site called `YourBud' - which looks suspiciously like Facebook, and that's when his troubles really begin. Out of the blue Tom starts getting `Bud Requests' from people he hasn't heard from since leaving his home and roots in sunny South Florida following college, to seek a career in comedy in sunny California.
Ok, so he's in a rut. It happens to us all.
As the Bud Requests - mostly from old girlfriends - who are, by no small coincidence, the source of the aforementioned haunting memories and decisions, start to pile up, and with them a long series of `what-ifs', Tom's head is in a whirl. Then the unimaginable happens. Tom's college friend, Tyler, `Buds' him, says he's getting married, and asks Tom to be his best man.
Now, I have to admit that in all honesty, I know Tom personally, or at least I know him in his secret identity of Clark Kent - I mean, Joe Dyson. Because of this, I know the places Tom takes us on this walk down memory lane - and subsequent road trip, and while I can't pin names on any of them, I know the people in the story.
And so do you! That's precisely what makes this such a great read. Even if you never meet them, you'll know the people in You and I are Intertwined, because we all know the types of people and personalities Joe describes and Tom encounters the best friend, the girl you had a crush on, the girl you asked to marry you, the teacher you had a crush on, the class clown, and the class bully.
In so many ways, reading this was not too much different than it would have been reading my own story of those times, places and people so many years and so many miles removed.
It's a fun, heartwarming story about a nice guy and the rocket scientist he married.
Do yourself a favor and get and read this book. Not only will you discover a thoroughly delightful read, you'll be helping an unemployed writer.
This is a terrible book. I am sending it back.
boy there are a lot of jokes in here.
I got this for my fiancé who is forever making dad jokes. This book was really good. It made him laugh, but now he does use the jokes that are in it.
